Everybody participate to make it a great time. My thanks and appreciation to you guys who made it to chicago and share your valuable time in appreciation of our friendship and the values we all carry from our Nerist days. And of course, the good wishes from those who couldn't make it also counts. Nitu Das and Pankaj (Nitu's husband), you guys were great. We appreciate your help and presence, especially Pankaj. Nitu, no offence meant! Mr.C Network (Biplab Sikdar) from rpi, you were the coolest guys with no hassles and full of energy for the toons. We are looking forward to see you again. And Mr. Bengal Tiger Woods on the making, the smart navigator. Kaushik, I'll always remember that we two were the only guys who could make it to the jacuji in the morning after those bloody marys and scotchs. Keep up and carry on those drives. We shall play 18 holes during the next meet. And our appreciation and thanks to Dipanita who mingled up with all of us so well and turns out to be a great performer. Watch out for your video clips on the MTV or V channel. Of course, Loy deserves credit for that. Buddy you are the coolest dude around. Thanks to you. By the way, you criket bat is on it way to NJ. Pradeeta and Srabori ( pardon me if I mispell it), the evening at your place was the best deal in our reunion. The entertainment session with the super kid 'Ria' was like a family version of grammy award. That evening was great. And Thanks to Rajarshi, Pooja and Ria. In fact, with you guys, we were able to roll out the reunion before the schedule start. We had so much fun and good time with all of you. And of Course Verma San, without him the reunion won't have been possible. His never exhausted energy for fun and good hearted nature was the main source that made the meet such a good time for all of us. And thanks to my wife priya for all the things she did to make everyone comfortable and enjoy. And thanks to all of us again and to myself for enjoying myself during the meet. Eh! As luck would have it, I spent last two days sitting in all day meetings. Anyways better late than never. Herein, what is present is my view of the funtime. May I request the rest of the folks to put in their few cents. Before I start the saga, I must thank the wonderful hosts at chicago... Priya & Rajen, Pradeepta & Shrabori, Verma and from out of state ... Puja (Rajeshri hmmm....he is a couch potato) for wonderful hospitality. Can't have been any better. Puja, Rajeshri and Biplab had decided to join the party before it started. They, I presume had other motives besides the meet. Biplab had a conference to attened and Rajeshri wanted to stink up a all suites hotel with the smell of fish. (He claims to have checked out the day before I reached but I believe otherwise.) Anyways Sikdar (me) and Halder (loy) had a plane to catch at 7:00 am at newark and as usual were running late. They managed to reach the gate about 5 minutes before the door closed. But you should hear what happened on the return journey. They reached the gate after it had closed. That story- coming up later. We did reach Chicago a little before time only to find out that Rajen and Rajeshri were nowhere to be seen. They showed up 50 min later with the usual excuse...got caught up in traffic. Love struck Loy had another destination- Michigan (three hours drive) to pick up his better half. He was on his way and so was I with Rajen and Rajeshri. On the drive back home, Rajeshri pulled out a tin of paan masala. He is a changed man, no longer chokes everybody while making "saada". I was also carrying a cricket bat. It is good thing he has given up saada. Remember the mail he sent about khaini. Could have been his own experience, I am keeping my fingers crossed. We reach Rajen's house and promply start Golf lessons. We dont have too many world class golfers. Its never too late and you never know. The *dude* (Rajen as affectionatly called by little Rhia) is a damn good coach. We couldnt have done anyting thing else in the house too. The TV was taken over by Biplab and Rhia watching the cartoon network. Boy, try changing the channel!!! Guys I have a design document to write. Will continue later.... PS So far in the cast. charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-nerist@mailinglists.org Precedence: bulk Reply-To: Status: RO hi everyone, well this mail has been in the pipeline for about three days now. for those of you who know be better will be more familiar with the built in delay in my system and wouldnt be too surprised. for others, speially those who were expecting an earlier report, i apologise. the meet actually started warming up from tuesday, july 13th at rajenda's house in the evening. apart from the rajen da and his wife priya, there were rajarshi (he's gonna kill me for spelling his name incorrectly) and pooja di, verma san (yo man) and myself. its a bit confusing here to mention the names as all three have names beginning with raj; rajen, rajesh and rajarshi. anyway. i didnt know that rajarhi da was such a good cook. he made some real good chicken that night. i guess the difference was in the amount of time he spent in frying just the onions. about 15 minutes. whien i cook, the whole process (from chopping the onions to turning the gas off) takes roughly the same time. next two days were spent in anticipation of the arrival of the others and the occassional trip to Devon street (the ultimate desi hangout in chicago). it was like back home. you know it when you see the garment shops with banners like "suitings, shirtings and dress materials", "jai hind stores - PAKISTANI and indian groceries". the best part was the cute girls. rajarshi da almost got a squint tring to sneak a glance on the sly without pooja di catching him. good to see that after fathering two kids, the flame inside is still alive. friday morning. kaushik sikdar and digboloy halder come to town. henceforth, in this mail, digboloy halder will be represented by either haloo, loy, haloo san interchangably. when i went to chicago, i knew i would have to hear a lot of wise-cracks on my hair loss. i took it all in knowing that my time would come too, when haloo san comes and i point at his head. but i was pleaseantly surprised to see his luxurious mane of jet black hair. i guess it has something to do with some recent arrivals in his life. dont mistake recent arrivals with newborn kids. recent arrivals means people he has met recently though how recently i'm not very sure. friday night around 9-10 the meet was officially decralred open to the toasts of bloddy-marys, bud-lights and tomato juice. present were rajen-priya, rajarshi-pooja--rhea, loy-dipanita, verma san (yo man), pradeepta-shrabari, kaushik, nitu-pankaj and biplab. everybody in general expressed surprise at how much the other had changed (read how much weight the other had gained). attempts were made to incite one another to get drunk faster and in the process eyebrows raised by the better halves as mouths loosened and secrets from the NERIST days came out in the open. people tried to deny, in order of priority, visits to the girls hostel taking "performance enhansing drugs" getiing stoned and waking up in the gutter anyway. it was the day of the catfish. after a whole year i had real fish. priya di should really consider patenting her catfish recipe. the "illish" mach (those who left early on sunday evening missed it, heh heh) was something to remember. i should have taken a photo and framed it. shrabori wasn't behind either. her salmon was great. three of us (kaushik da, haloo san and myself) got in the kitchen earlier and sneaked off as much as we could before anyone else had a chance. anywa we get back to friday. verma san (yo man) was the first to get knocked out. missed the great food in the bargain. the funfair continued till about 1:00 in the night when we left for the holiday inn with enough alcohol in hand to keep everyone happy. getting into the trend of the things, i'll stop here and continue sometime soon. dont hold you breath. biplab sikdar (90 ec) -------------------------------------------------- nerist (nerist@mailinglists.org) WWW: http://members.tripod.com/~nerist From nerist-owner-ksik=bell-labs.com@mailinglists.org Wed Jul 21 12:14:23 1999 Received: from grubby.research.bell-labs.com (research.bell-labs.com [135.104.2.9]) by surfer.amc.bell-labs.com (980427.SGI.8.8.8/970903.SGI.AUTOCF) via SMTP id MAA14777 for ; The Meet was really GREAT and enjoyful.Everyone was in jolly spirits, and we had lots of fun, with the old friends -- as after all OLD is GOLD. At first, I would like to thank all the folks who had come for the meet -- well for all others who could not make it to the meet this year becuase of their busy schedules at their respective places, I do appreciate their best wishes for this meet. Things that we did were really a kind of pretty cool .........The Ride along the Chicago River down to the Lake Michigan was fun .... Speed boat ride in the Lake was fun too. Visit to the Devon Street made us feel as if we were in India amongst the shops selling Sarees and Suitings ... Desi Food was good too. Holiday Inn was a nice place too -- Swimming was good fun and exercise during the Meet. And above all, everyone of us sitting down together and remembering about the good old NERIST days was really nostalgic. Also, I wish to convey my special Thanks to everyone who made the Meet successful. Rajen Priya deserve special mention for doing a good job of arranging things and tasty dinner and fun at their place. Pradeepta Sarbari also were good hosts for the wonderful evening (17 th July). Rajarshi Pooja Rhia, Thanks a Million for coming to Chicago earlier than the Meet, it made us feel as if the meet had begun since you came here, and is still going on -- if you are comfortable, we shall plan something interesting this coming weekend too, just let us know. Haloo San, good job done with golf -- Do you play in NJ too ?, and Dipanita, good show, and Thanks for the coffee in MI, I really needed it. Neetu and Pankaj, Thanks for coming inspite of your busy schedule in Indianapolis. YO Man (Biplab), frankly admitting, I could not make out a line from your paper, and I still wonder how I missed you at the Airport Gate, but good that you were waiting and Kaushik, you play golf well too, please take some time and write the Part 2 of the meet early.
